We must have faith because that will keep us dedicated to our goals. Ulysses stresses that death is inevitable, but we must have faith that life will go on: “Death closes all; but something ere the end,/Some work of noble note, may yet be done” (Tennyson). He emphasizes that as long as we are alive, we can use our time to do something positive so that we can have a meaningful existence. Arnold reminds us to have faith in each other. Without faith, we will be “Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,/Where ignorant armies clash by night” (Arnold). Many people fear what they do not know, such as other races, cultures, and experiences. Arnold asks us to trust each other, because without trust, it is easier to fear and hate, and consequently, it will be easier to fight with each other.

Faith is one of the glues that bind humanity. Without it, these poems say that we will be prone to hate and anger. When we hate and we are angry, it is easier to stage wars. We live in a dog-eat-dog world, but sometimes, we have to pause and think about the kind of person we want to be and the kind of humanity we want to promote among our children. If we want to choose something to feel then, may it be faith, because faith will help us become better people and can help us provide a more peaceful and tolerant society to our children and their children, as well?
