  1. Several factors influence the value obtained for a t Some factors affect the numerator of the t statistic, and other factors influence the size of the estimated standard error in the denominator.  For each of the following, indicate whether the factor influences the numerator and denominator of the t statistic and determine whether the effect would be to increase the value of t (farther from zero) or decrease the value of t (closer to zero).  In each case, assume that all other factors remain constant.

    a. Increase the variability of the scores.

The factor influences (increases) the denominator of the t statistic, and the effect would be to decrease the value of t (closer to zero).

  1. Increase the number of scores in the sample.

The factor influences (decreases) the denominator of the t statistic, and the effect would be to increase the value of t (farther from zero).

  1. Increase the difference between the sample mean and the population means.

The factor influences (increases) the numerator of the t statistic, and the effect would be to increase the value of t (farther from zero).

  1. People tend to evaluate the quality of their lives relative to others around them. In a demonstration of this phenomenon, Frieswijk, Buunk, Steverink, and Slaets (2004) conducted ininterviewsith frail elderly people. In the interview, each person was compared with fictitious others who were worse off. After the interviews, the elderly people reported more satisfaction with their own lives. The following are hypothetical data similar to those obtained in the research study. The scores are measures on a life-satisfaction scale for a sample of n = 9 elderly people who completed the interview. Assume that the population average score on this scale is μ = 20. Are the data sufficient to conclude that the people in this sample are significantly more satisfied than others in the general population? Use a one-tailed test with α = .05. The life-satisfaction scores for the sample are 18, 23, 24, 44, 19, 27, 23, 26, 25.
